About Thanksgiving Coffee Co.

Thanksgiving Coffee Company, established in 1972 on California’s Mendocino Coast, grew from the region’s back-to-the-land movement—where environmental activism, cooperative economics, and creative independence reshaped how business could serve community. Founded by Paul and Joan Katzeff, the company emerged from a culture influenced by early organic farming, coastal artisans, working harbor grit, and the ecological consciousness that defined Northern California in the 1960s and 70s. From this landscape of fog, redwoods, fisheries, and bold environmental leadership, Thanksgiving Coffee helped define the modern specialty coffee movement by uniting exceptional craft with social and environmental responsibility.

The company introduced one of the first certified organic coffee lines in the United States, became Fair Trade USA’s second licensed roaster, and supported the creation of the world’s first farmer-owned cupping laboratories—advancing producer autonomy and reshaping how quality and value are shared throughout the supply chain. Roasting continues in Fort Bragg’s working harbor, where small-batch precision and rigorous quality control earned the rare distinction of 2017 Roaster of The Year
